Chapter Twelve

The car ride was tense as Lorre expertly maneuvered through the downtown Atlanta streets. Grady was not far from the Georgia Dome, but between the one directional streets and the crowds from the game, the drive was taking longer than expected. Raven was quiet with the exception of the occasional sniffle. Her head was turned toward the passenger side window. Every now and then Lorre could see Raven out of her periphery wipe a tear from her cheek. Finally the two arrived, and Lorre whipped the car into a parking space as close to the emergency room entrance as possible.

Raven and Lorre rushed into the hospital through the emergency room doors and made their way to the nurses’ station. The nurse checked the roster of new arrivals and instructed the two it would be necessary for them to have a seat in the waiting room. Raven pressed her, wanting to know what was happening with her husband, but the only thing the nurse could say is he was rushed into emergency surgery upon his arrival, and she had no further report at this time. She directed them to the area of the hospital where emergency surgeries were performed. Raven and Lorre had no choice but to join the host of people sitting in the waiting room. Lorre found two seats for them and the women settled in for what they hoped would be a short wait.

The waiting room was busy with medical staff moving about, EMT’s bringing in newly injured patients and others waiting to hear about their loved ones who were behind surgery doors. Lorre and Raven sat quietly, each in their own thoughts. Worry and concern were evident between the two. Lorre worried about Schayne and also how Raven was holding up. She loved her like a sister and never wanted anything but good to happen in her life. Raven was worried beyond belief. The not knowing was getting the best of her and all she could do was hope and pray everything would be all right.

As is typical for hospital waiting rooms, there was a television hoisted high above the seats, positioned in the corner of the room for maximum viewing. Although the volume was low and there was a muted buzz in the waiting room, the volume level of the television was audible. It was tuned in to the Falcons Buccaneer game. There were some who were tuned into the game, watching intently. It was the last thing Raven wanted to see. The outcome of the game was so unimportant considering. But as she pondered and prayed, out of her periphery she could see the instant replay of the incident that led her to the place she was now. They showed the hit on Schayne over and over, from every angle with commentators giving the play by play. It was painstaking and Raven wanted desperately to shut the television off. She didn’t need to see it again.

One hour, two hours later, the two still sat waiting.
